What is a Hydraulic Cylinder?

A hydraulic cylinder is a type of actuator used in hydraulic systems. In these systems, mechanical movement is achieved using fluid pressure. The hydraulic cylinder produces a linear motion using fluid pressure.

A hydraulic cylinder usually contains a piston, a cylinder, and a fill port or port. Hydraulic oil or a similar liquid is filled into the cylinder. At one end of the piston is an output shaft that carries the force being pushed or pulled outwards. At the other end, there is a filling hole or port that changes the pressure of the liquid inside the piston. Hydraulic systems control the amount of fluid pressed into the hydraulic cylinders, allowing the piston to move in the desired direction.

Cylinders are also known as 'hydraulic jacks', 'hydraulic pistons' or 'actuators'. In simple terms, they convert fluid power into mechanical energy. A hydraulic cylinder differs from a hydraulic motor in that it performs a linear (transforming) motion rather than a rotary motion. Hence the term “linear motor”.

What are the Hydraulic Cylinder Types?

Hydraulic cylinders come in various sizes, structural features and functions. Here are some commonly used types of hydraulic cylinders:

1. Single Acting Hydraulic Cylinders: This type of cylinders can apply force in only one direction. The force is usually generated by applying hydraulic pressure to one end of the cylinder and is free to move at the other end.

2. Double Acting Hydraulic Cylinders: These cylinders can apply force in both forward and reverse directions. Hydraulic pressure is applied for forward movement, while pressure is released or reduced for reverse movement.

Double Acting Hydraulic Cylinders
Double acting hydraulic cylinders are an important component widely used in hydraulic systems. They have the ability to generate force in both directions. This means being able to apply force in both forward and backward motion directions. Here are the basic components and operation of double acting hydraulic cylinders:

Body (Tube): This part, which forms the outer shell of the cylinder, is usually made of metal or alloy and has a space in which the piston moves.

Piston: It is the part that moves inside the cylinder and is subjected to pressure. The piston has a seal or seal that serves to push the oil inside the cylinder forward and backward.

Shaft (Rod): This part, which is connected to the piston and extends outside the cylinder, is used to transmit force to the workpiece or other mechanism outside the cylinder.

Seals (Seals and Gaskets): Used to maintain the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder and prevent it from leaking out. This includes piston seals, tube seals and gaskets.

Linkages: These are the fittings used to connect the cylinder to other components in the hydraulic system. This usually includes parts such as mounting flanges on the body of the cylinder or mounting pins on the end of the shaft.

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders are used in applications where hydraulic pressure is strong enough to push the piston in both forward and reverse travel directions. For example, they are frequently used in construction machinery, industrial equipment and agricultural machinery. These rollers are versatile as they are suitable for both pushing and pulling operations.

There are two primary types of hydraulic cylinder structures used in industry: tie rods and welded body cylinders. Beyond this, other broad types of cylinder designs include: telescopic, reciprocating, differential, rephasing, and single- and double-acting hydraulic cylinders.

Hydraulic cylinders are usually  double acting. This means that oil under pressure can be applied to both sides of the piston to provide movement in both directions. Single acting  cylinders are sometimes used where the weight of the load is used to return the cylinder to the closed position.

Hydraulic cylinders provide greater flexibility in design and construction when transferring force between two different points. Cylinders of different sizes make it possible to create a system that can pull, push and lift weights. Additionally, elbows and corners can be incorporated into the system design, which is useful if there are real space constraints.

However, the hydraulic cylinder should only be used for linear pushing and pulling. No bending movements or side loads must be transmitted to the piston rod or cylinder. A cylinder should therefore ideally be connected using a single yoke with spherical ball bearing. This allows the roller to move and allows for any misalignment between it and the load it is pushing.

How to Choose a Hydraulic Cylinder?

There are several important factors to consider when choosing a hydraulic cylinder:

1.Application Requirements: First, the requirements of the application in which the roller will be used must be taken into account. This includes factors such as the load the cylinder must carry, travel distance, speed, working environment, etc.

2. Power and Movement Need: The force that the cylinder must produce and the amount of movement it must perform must be determined. This will determine the diameter, piston area and pressure capacity of the cylinder.

3.Mounting and Dimensions: The dimensions and geometry of the area where the cylinder will be mounted should also be taken into account. The cylinder must comply with factors such as mounting direction, mounting type and available space.

4. Working Environment Conditions: The characteristics of the environment in which the cylinder will operate should be taken into consideration. For example, if there is high temperature, corrosive environment or chemical effects, suitable materials and coatings must be selected.

5.Durability and Maintenance: The durability and maintenance requirements of the selected cylinder are important. A long-lasting and easy-to-maintain cylinder should be preferred.

6.Price and Costs: Of course, budget is also a factor. However, it is important not only to minimize cost but also to consider other factors such as efficiency, durability and performance.

7.Certification and Compliance: It must be ensured that the cylinder complies with the standards and requirements of the industry in which it will be used. It is also important to obtain the necessary certificates and documents from the manufacturer or seller.

Hydraulic cylinders Revision / Repair
Hydraulic cylinder revision is the maintenance and rearrangement of cylinders used in hydraulic systems. This process is done to improve the performance of the cylinder, ensure its safety and optimize its function.

The revision process usually includes these steps:

Evaluation: The condition of the cylinder is examined and problem areas are identified. This includes detecting leaks, wear or damaged parts.

Part Replacement: Required parts are replaced. This may include critical parts such as seals, shafts, bearings, etc.

Cleaning and Repair: Cylinder parts are cleaned and repaired if necessary. This may include changing the oil inside the cylinder, renewing seals, and other measures necessary to prevent leaks.

Assembly and Testing: The cylinder is reassembled and tested after the overhaul. This may include pressure tests, leak tests and functional tests.

Documentation: Details of the revision process are recorded and documented. This provides reference for future maintenance or overhauls.

Hydraulic cylinder overhaul extends the life of the cylinder, increases its performance and helps prevent unexpected malfunctions. This operation must be carried out by a qualified technician or a hydraulic systems specialist.

Two or more cylinders can be installed 'parallel' or 'series'. The holes and rods are then aligned to ensure that all rods extend and/or retract evenly when flow is directed to the first or last cylinder within the hydraulic system. This is known as 'rephasing' hydraulic cylinders.

In 'parallel' applications, bore and rod dimensions are always the same and hydraulic cylinders are always used in pairs.

In 'series' applications, bore and rod sizes are always different and two or more hydraulic cylinders may be used. The holes and rods are sized so that all rods extend or retract equally when flow is applied to the first or last cylinder in the system. This hydraulic synchronization of rod positions eliminates the need for a flow divider in the hydraulic system or any type of mechanical connection between the cylinder rods.

How do Hydraulic Cylinders work?
Hydraulic cylinders, also known as hydraulic cylinders, derive their power from pressurized hydraulic fluid, normally hydraulic oil.

The hydraulic cylinder consists of a cylinder barrel in which a piston connected to a piston rod moves back and forth. The barrel is closed at both ends by the cylinder base – also called the cap end – and the cylinder head. The second is where the piston rod exits the cylinder. The piston has sliding rings and seals. The piston divides the inside of the cylinder into two chambers. First, the lower chamber or cover end and secondly, the piston rod side chamber, the 'rod end'. Hydraulic pressure acts on the piston to do linear work and motion.

Flanges, journals and/or yokes are mounted on the cylinder body. The piston rod also has mounting attachments to attach the hydraulic cylinder to the object or machine component it pushes.

The hydraulic cylinder is the actuator or 'motor' side of the system. The 'generator' side of the hydraulic system is the hydraulic pump, which brings a constant or regulated flow of oil to the underside of the hydraulic cylinder to move the piston rod upward. The piston pushes the hydraulic oil from the other chamber back into the tank. Assuming that the oil pressure in the piston rod chamber is approximately zero, the force applied to the piston rod is equal to the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder multiplied by the piston area (F=PA).

If oil is pumped into the piston rod side chamber, the piston moves downwards and the hydraulic oil from the piston area flows back into the chamber without pressure. Pressure in the piston rod area chamber (Pull Force) / (Piston Area – Piston Rod Area).
